Boone and Magnolia Plantation's in Charlestion

Magnificent Magnolia Plantation Charleston SC

We visited Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston SC. The temperature was 98 degrees.

We drove down a beautiful lane of old oak trees that were over 150 yrs old.

At the end of the driveway was the plantation owned by eight generations of the Drayton Family. The first house was burned down by accident. (A fire in the kitchen which burned the house to the ground.) It was rebuilt and the second plantation was burned by General Sherman during the Civil War. The third home which is the present one was an old hunting lodge owned by the Hasties and was shipped to this site then reassembled .

The plantation lost many old oak trees from hurricanes during the years, but it still has over 500 acres of gardens and grounds to explore. The best time to see the full bloom of the plantation is in March and early April.

John Drayton Hastie, from the eleventh generation died in 2002. He is survived by his wife and nephews that are continuing with the preservation of the Plantation. He loved the gardens and worked in them right along with the ground keepers. He requested to be cremated and have his ashes buried inside a tree which can be seen today. The same tree his great great great grandfather planted. Inside the tree is a small back door where they put his ashes.
